Album

Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player is the sixth studio album by Elton John. Released in January, 1973 by DJM Records, it was John's sixth normal studio album release, first of his two studio albums released in 1973 second one was Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, released 9 months later, and was his second straight No. 1 album in the US, yielding his first No. 1 single in both the US and Canada: Crocodile Rock. Daniel was also a major hit from the album, giving him his second Canadian No. Released by DJM Records, it was John's sixth normal studio album John became a true superstar with 1972's Honky Chateau. He followed that album with Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, his most direct, pop-oriented album to date. Designed as a pastiche of classic and contemporary pop styles, the album almost sounds like an attempt to demonstrate the diversity of the JohnTaupin team. Though the hits are remarkable - Daniel is a moving ballad and Crocodile Rock is a sly take on '50s rock & roll - the album is slightly uneven. Visually, musically, and in every other way, Dont Shoot Me Im Only the Piano Player is an engaging entertainment and a nice step forward in phase two of Elton John s career, the phase that began with Honky Chateau. The essence of Eltons personality, on record and in performance, has always been innocent exuberance, a quality intrinsic in most of the best rock n roll of the Fifties and early Sixties. Eltons only major problem after the success of his first album was finding the right direction for his talent, and until Honky the path chosen led up a blind alley. It found him and lyricist Bernie Taupin becoming purposely concise in their songwriting-even radio-friendly, which wasnt a bad thing. Besides the hits, like the tensely foreboding Daniel and rock n roll uplifter Crocodile Rock, many of the album cuts suckerpunch with equally killer pop hooks and lyrical smarts-from the schoolyard yarn in the lively, mellotron-enhanced Teacher I Need You to the empathetic piano-and-string ballad Have Mercy on the Criminal to the punchy horns in sing-along rocker Elderberry
