Armed Forces is the third studio album by British musician Elvis Costello, released in the UK by Radar Records and in the US by Columbia in 1979. The album had the working title Emotional Fascism. The North American version omitted the track Sunday's Best and replaced it with Costello's version of Nick Lowe's What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding, which had been released. Sing-song hooks, elaborate metaphors using war for love, and dense musical passages twirl around like carnival rides check the waltzy Sundays Best so it sometimes sounds unusually, and blissfully, claustrophobic. In contrast to the stripped-down pop and rock of his first two albums, Armed Forces boasted a detailed and textured pop production, but it was hardly lavish. However, the more spacious arrangements - complete with ringing pianos, echoing reverb, layered guitars, and harmonies - accent Costello's melodies, making the record more accessible than his first two albums. Though Armed Forces is in many ways the most conceptually aggressive and confrontational of Costello's first three records, it doesn't carry with it the same immediacy of his first two releases, 1977's My Aim Is True and 1978's This Year's Model, on which he came as a man with something to prove. There's something intensely subversive about My Aim Is True with its undercurrents of anger and frustration providing a foundation for his synthesis of pop melody, country twang, and punk energy. This Year's Model, meanwhile, saw Costello expanding his sound signific. Today I look at Elvis Costello and his band The Attractions 1979 album Armed Forces which contains classic songs Olivers Army and Accidencts Will Costello - Armed Forces 1979. Less hot under the collar than This Year's Model , Armed Forces was partly inspired by Elvis Costello and the Attractions' 1978 American tour. The songs are set to deceptively poppy arrangements that use plinky Abba keyboards Oliver's Army, a hit single about mercenaries, Beatles-ish devices the fade on Party Girl, and whimsical waltz-time signatures Sunday's Best to mask their core cynicism. Ironically, one of ARMED FORCES' best-known tracks wasn't officially part of the album
