Although modern jazz as we know it is essentially a post-war development, it has had a spectacular growth, and ten years have added enormous chapters to sixty years of jazz history. Not the least of these chapters has been written on the West Coast since 1950. And in West Coast Jazz a major role has been played by a group of all-stars from The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. Yes, 1948 was the year that Howard Rumsey began to shake the music world and to bring out a new style. The most remarkable thing about Howard was his conviction that modern jazz could also be popular jazz, and that this could be accomplished without concessions or compromises. His policy was to ignore the meaningless divisions between the various modern jazz groups, to bring together the finest available instrumentalists and writers, and to transform the concert stage into a workshop where their music could be heard by larger audiences. Howard's tenacity and his immense gifts as an organizer overcame both the incredulity of the musicians and the apathy of the public. Modern Jazz is now firmly established in Southern California, and Howard is the man most responsible for bringing this music and you together.

It was then bound to happen. The Army & Navy Academy, with many fine ears for good music and one of the most beautiful campuses in California to set the stage with, had to come together. The Cadets at the Academy, especially an older group known as the Firstclassmen (Seniors), heard Howard and the many stars he has turned out, and the many selections that his new ideas had displayed, got their heads together and decided to feature a concert here at the Academy where everyone could hear it too. We then took the music out of the club again and put it 'live' on the campus. The head of the Academy, Col. W. C. Atkinson, was please to see his 'boys' able to enjoy their music from the strings, reeds and horns of the now -- all-time greats of this new style. A former Band Master himself, along with Capt. Al. Polhamus, the Band Instructor at the Academy whose published music has greatly enhanced the appreciation of good music of all kinds for the Cadet Corps.

Yes, the time was right and so Jazz came to A.N.A. The Firstclassmen brought the first concert in December of 1956 and then again for this date. This time jazz clubs were formed, the local disk jockey gave his full help in promoting another annual concert, even to the extent of broadcasting it from the stage 'live' (plus other DJ's who spread the concert date over many states). The concert lasted three hours with three sets of the finest of all types of jazz that this album represents.

Yes A.N.A., Jazz came to you because we need it today as part of our security and faith that a man has the right to get up on the stage and play what he feels no matter where he is. . . . You can be proud of this concert because more will follow and so America moves on. Those responsible for putting on this show were the members of the Senior Class and its Officers: President, Cadet Neil Nydegger; Vice-President Cadet Fred Guenther; our Treasurers, Cadets Rudolfo Nelson and Henry Hampton, and Sergeant of Arms, Cadet Charles Robertson. One of our biggest Cadet promoters is Roger Blewett, a member of the Academy Dance Band and head promoter for good jazz on the campus, and, of course, there's me. Who am I, well, I'm the advisor of this bunch of musical rebels known as the Firstclassmen who have made me the proudest man alive because I have been able to stand and watch them grow in stature and in ideals which has made this Academy true to its purpose. That's the story of a group of boys, their dreams on stage and a night to remember on wax . . . JAZZ AT A.N.A.
