Ultraviolet is the sixth full-length studio album by American sludge metal group, Kylesa. It is also the group's third album to be released through Season of Mist. Writing for Ultraviolet was done periodically throughout the span of two years, unlike previous albums which were written and recorded during shorter periods of time. In an interview with Echoes And Dust, Philip Cope stated it was the first time he played the theremin a lot for an album, as well as incorporating instruments such as. With Kylesa, there is never any BS. The album's opening track, 'Exhale,' pulls you into the core of Kylesa immediately, waiving any sort of dramatic introduction in favor of representing their signature sound from the very first second. Kylesa's auditory swamp continues to lure the listener in further with the hypnotic and hauntingly beautiful 'Unspoken,' which oozes the essence of guitarist, vocalist Laura Pleasants as she trades vocal lines with an ominous harmonic chant. Beginning to wander through heavy metal territory, the band showcases an absolutely massiv. With a sound that's not only spacy but spacious, Kylesa continue to push their sound into the stratosphere, opting for atmosphere where they once would have erected a monumental wall of murky guitars. While it would be easy to see this change as the band reining in their sound, it's probably more appropriate to say that they've tamed it so as to make better use of its monumental power rather than just letting it thrash about destroying things. Everything about the trajectory of their career seemed to suggest that their magnum opus was well on its way: 2009s Static Tensions found Kylesa going toe to toe with the giants of the sludgestoner metal scene in terms of pounding riffs 2010s Spiral Shadow had the band blazing a trail with their own sound and becoming indie darlings in the. process 2012s From the Vaults vol. 1 was a b-side and covers compilation that was far better than it had the right to be. Whatever would come next which happens to be Ul. Kylesa prove why their unique take on metal truly inspires deep thought, the inventive new sub-sub genre designation and maybe a little herbal medicine. RATING: 910 4. Advanced search. Type: Full-length. Release date: May 28th, 2013. Catalog ID: SOM 275. The album title Ultraviolet is a reference to reaching for the intangible, towards something we know is there, but cannot see. In an interview with eMusic, Cope explains, I wouldnt be doing what I do now if I wasnt reaching for something more - even if I dont know exactly what that is. Ultraviolet Q&A
