i picked up another copy today and played it. again, hurt sounds like crap. rest of the album is alright. certainly not up to the quality of the with teeth reissue but still exceeds the original press of this so i guess that is a good thing. original press sounds way too flat. so far, with teeth is the best reissue out of the definitive reissues IMO.

You sadistic mother ****er, you. Keep seducing me with your wares.
HappyLove HappyLove
Perfect sounding press. It has great depth and absolutely no noise in it's recording. It sounds significantly better than the CD, which doesn't sound bad in the first place.
Thetalen Thetalen
Wow Wow Wow, what a violent pressing for this album !!! The sound is like a tempest on your stereo !! The bass are deep and clean, the guitars are hard and dry like they must be.. Everything is perfect on this Trent release.. Thanks ...

This is the NIN coup de grace. "Hersey", "Closer","March of The Pigs", "Hurt" - "Downward Spiral" is Reznor and the band at their finest bringing the melancholious discordian attitude expected from their works while not being a purely instrumental record either as they drifted more towards the industrial side of rock. This is NIN at their greatest, though not most polished, as "Hurt" plays out this record sounding like it was recorded in a garage - and somehow that's just perfect, according to the discography of NIN.
Thetalas Thetalas
Impressive release. Cristal clear sounding record and a great mix. Comes with a 12 page booklet as well, 2 inserts and 2 sleeves. This is what all vinyl record releases should look like, not cheap vinyl + sleeve releases.

Hurt sounds like garbage on this. What the hell? And TR apparently approved this? Come on....remember the Ghosts LP issues??
Liarienen Liarienen
Did anyone have issues with “a warm place” & “The Downward Spiral” having surface noise theoughout the songs? Rest of the record sounds good and then those two songs tend to have surface noise with “Hurt” going in and out. I have had 2 copies with the same issue.

Huge NIN fan, newbie record guy, love this album. I do think it sounds different than what I remember a bit, but its all great! Very clean edition that I wasn't sure I wanted on record, but I personally am very happy with this album. To be more descriptive, this breathes new life into this album that I already cherish.
Jorad Jorad
am I the only one who thinks the side D (which contains the song "Hurt") sounds strange. All the other sides are o.k. and pressing quality is very much satisfactory, but I think the pressing of the side D has some issues. I purchased this issue from online shop in Korea, and returned it due to the pressing issue with the side D. Now I just got the same issue from Amazon.com and found the same pressing issue. Anyone who has this album, just try to spin the side D (the song titled "Hurt") and check the sound quality.
watchman watchman
I consider myself a huge pre The Fragile NIN fan personally, and I thought at first a couple different songs sounded a little different, including Hurt. However, I believe this is intentional and adds some different depth than the original. Not saying I love it more or less, just different and I very much do enjoy this "variation" of the album, including Hurt (funny story though, when I did play hurt I recleaned my stylus because i thought there was something wrong, second time around it wasn't any better, went with it, and enjoyed it).
Gagas Gagas
You might be right. I talked with my daughter who loves NIN more than me, and she said it's exactly the same with the music source she has been hearing. Thanks for your thought.
Alsanadar Alsanadar
I don't have this record so i don't know, But i do know Trent made it sound weird (as in making the audio switch from Left speaker to Right speaker at random) to add to the atmosphere of the album. Hope i could help
Hi_Jacker Hi_Jacker
Exceptional sounding pressing. Second only to my In Rainbows boxset. Highly recommended - even to casual NIN listeners and audiophiles in general, BOMBASTIC.

Pressed at Pallas...explains why it sounds so damn good. One of my favorite records.
Kajishakar Kajishakar
Why is this, and various other unopened releases cheaper second-hand than straight from his NIN.com shop?
Marinara Marinara
Right after they stopped working with sandbag for distribution, they started to appear online and in other shops. I managed to pick up Fragile Deviations from Amazon.it for about £20, It’s still £75 in the nin shop!
Mananara Mananara
I just picked this up for €25 in a bricks-and-mortar record shop, happy early Christmas to me!

One of the greatest albums ever made. This pressing is of the highest quality and is absolutely essential. The sound quality is incredible, the LPs and inserts are like a trip down memory lane. I might buy another copy just because I love it so much. It is incredible.
Carrot Carrot
The sound is just perfect with this pressing. A must have.
Manazar Manazar
Can't say enough good things about this and the other reissues, no problems with mine whatsoever, I don't have any other pressings to compare it to, but to my ears this is perfect, worth every penny
Breder Breder
Mine copy is made in EU. And not include white inner sleeve. only color sleeve. Does anyone have the same ?
Fiarynara Fiarynara
Mine is the same, bought in Germany. First spin of NIN on vinyl ever - very happy so far!
Virn Virn
Is "Reptile" intro cut and added at the end of "Eraser" like in Back To Black edition?
Golden Lama Golden Lama
Just bought the 2017 vinyl remaster, no reptile intro at all at the end of side 3...very quick fade-out at the end of eraser

I ordered 3 of the def editions (DS, Broken, Fragile) and, like a lot of others I waited since December of last year to have the order fulfilled. Worth the wait? Depends on your level of patience. I'm a pretty patient fellow, so a definitive "yes!" from me. My records, packaging, everything came immaculate - no surface noise (well DS is the only one I've listened to all the way through), none of the glue problems, nothing missing, bent, torn, or broken (except the album of that name). I'm not discounting that people have had the problems they say - companies use crap mailers, glue can be shoddy, postal employees handle stuff without care. However, I'm not so sure this is indicative of the release but just outliers (although it would suck to be that outlier). Because we all know there are pressings which are infamously crap all around. Unless I was totally lucky, I don't think these are in that category. My records sound awesome and dead quiet. For that one turd who copy and pasted the same summary in each of the release pages about lousy packaging: I don't know what trailer park meth you've been smoking but your mind is beyond faded. The details are great, all the card stock, materials, and printing are of the highest quality. I almost feel like you're sitting on old copies of these albums and want to junk the new ones to keep the others values high - I don't know, but you're way off base. I don't give one fractal of a f--- if these are the "definitive" (hipster turd voice activated) versions or not. They're awesome, def or otherwise. Quick tip if you're having glue troubles: don't settle for tape. Take a glue stick and a toothpick. Use the toothpick to accurately and conservatively apply glue from the stick wherever the glue is coming undone. Always works for me. Bottom line: if you like these albums and don't have a copy: cop 'em.
Landarn Landarn
Having compared this to the Back to Black cut by Kevin Gray, I find the Back to Black to be superior over this new 'definitive' edition.
fr0mTheSkY fr0mTheSkY
I'm also debating on whether I want to pick up the new definitive edition because I love the 2008 B2B version...
Voodoozragore Voodoozragore
To me, this Definitive Edition sounds a bit richer in the details than the Back To Black and the break up of the tracks per side has a better flow.
Fecage Fecage
I have been wondering this. I have heard reports that B2B is better and others that DE is better. I'm quite happy with my B2B so I may skip this release. It sounds like the included essay isn't really worth it.
hardy hardy
Definitive version sounds amazing. Sounds like a perfect pressing of the flac version. Can tell Reznor took the time to make these versions great. Packaging was alright; same as other versions except it came with a little booklet describing the making of the album and the state of music at the time. I thought the book was well done; didn't care for the spare printed sleeves, felt kinda cheap and useless. All in all it is what it set out to be; the "definitive" version of their best album.
Nikohn Nikohn
izzy6 Keyser__Soze Sounds like a perfect pressing of the flac version. The ''flac'' version is not perfect. It has very low Dynamic range. DR5http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/125193 Not to be a loudness war shill, but I have to agree. Compression is a fine and necessary tool and it's used extensively in the original master of TDS as well as most of Trent's music. However, the TDS and Broken digital remasters sound speaker-blowingly crushed to me and I cant't hear most of what's going on. It's not inherently bad because it's "DR5", as a lot of albums hang around that spot and sound just as intended. But this just sounds wrong.

Trent may have spared no expense on the pressing and remastering, but he completely dropped the ball with the crappy packaging of the artwork and sleeve. ALL the new reissues suffer from this carelessness, meaning that the original pressings are *still* the definitive versions when it comes to the overall experience. Trent tried to call his shot with these, but whiffed big time on the packaging. He basically went against his own vinyl creed, which is rather embarrassing.
Malodor Malodor
I wouldn't take a lot of stock in this review. The packaging and attention to detail on these reissues is second to none.

How does this "definitive edition" compare with the previous vinyl releases?
Mr_Jeйson Mr_Jeйson
nihilicious Mine is full of surface noise, even after cleaning. Unlistenable. Hope it's just an outlier. A replacement fixed the surface noise, though there is a divet that causes brief popping on one side. Otherwise, excellent sound.

Got mine through the mail today. Excellent quality pressing. Flat and quiet. The remaster is excellent. Deep and rich sound without being bloated. Soundstage and instrument separation is excellent. Sadly the mailer they use is not great in the US, outer sleeve suffered some minor damage at the corners during transit.

So how's this new repress in terms of sound quality?

You most likely bought an older version of this and not the 2017 Defintive Edition. That is only available through purchases on the nine inch nails website at this point and not available retail
