Roll the Bones. September 1991. 14th Studio Recording. Roll The Bones, the bands 14th studio record, was recorded once again at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec and McClear Place in Toronto, Ontario. Rupert Hine returned as co-producer, after previously producing Presto. Roll the Bones has a taste of rap, a bit of funk, and a bigger groove than fans expected from Rush at the time. Geddy, after the recording of the album, said: Im pleased with the way the band has been able to streamline the sound over the past couple of records. I think its a positive change. Im also pleased with the way weve been able to utilize a stronger sense of melody and vocal harmony. The main character, unhappy, unsympathetic, and alienated from domestic life, goes out to drink and gamble. He gets a little more than he expected, but comes away with a new zest for life, and even a little more appreciation for home and family. Sometimes, living means taking risks. Other times, we choose to take risks, to feel more alive. Roll the Bones Q&A. From a lyrical perspective, 1991's Roll the Bones is quite possibly Rush's darkest album most of the songs deal with death in no uncertain terms, but from a musical point of view, the record treads territory highbrow melodic hard rock similar to its recent predecessors, with only a few surprises thrown in for good measure. Roll the Bones was another big hit for Rush, hitting No. 3 in the U. and Top 10 in the U. and going on to sell more than a million copies. This album had a real flow to it, a real strong, effortless flow, recalled Lee. We spent a long time writing, probably longer than we've ever spent writing. This doesn't make it one of the band's better offerings, however. It's a bit better than HOLD YOUR FIRE, but again it suffers from being such a calculated effort at expanding the group's sales. Sure, it starts off well enough. It IS a Rush album. Dreamline has some cool guitar stuff an especially neat solo and is a real keeper.
