The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound-consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs-marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album number 314 in their list of the 500. If an album is 'missing' that you think deserves to be here, you can include it in your own chart from the My Charts page The Velvet Underground best tracks. The Velvet Underground was the first album released on Verves parent company, MGM Records. After the mild success of White LightWhite Heat, the band was promoted to MGM proper and signed a two-album contract with the label. TVU had a far mellower folk-rock sound than their previous albums, a direct result of Lou Reeds desire to make the band sound more commercially-friendly. Unfortunately, this effort failed. While White Light made it to 199 on the Billboard Top 200, TVU failed to chart at all. Sales were so disappointing, in fact, that the label dropped the band completely later that year. Throughout their first three albums, VU continued to challenge societal norms through their lyrics and rock music itself through their unorthodox instrumental approach. Their sound was theirs alone, which proved to be an obstacle when it came to sales. The majority of popular music fans simply weren't ready for the bleakly beautiful vision of VU. I've found the first three studio albums broken out of this set, plus "1969" (which I didn't buy), in two different used record stores in Ottawa. If you stumble across them as individual LPs, you may not realize that the first three records, plus Nico's, are all in their mono mixes. There doesn't appear to be any information on the covers or labels about this, and I imagine one could pick them up assuming they were stereo.I was actually HOPING they were mono, but didn't figure that out until a scan of the barcodes brought me here. Nobody at the one store knew either. (Although the other one I bought from put "MONO!" on the plastic outer sleeve, and charged $7 more for that one.) The "1969" compilation is stereo, though.Just so you know...
Kann Kann
Thanks for sharing that Tom. I just picked up White Light White Heat at one those stores in Ottawa and very happy with my purchase!

My copy of this box set has a completely different cover. Any chance of adding the new (2018?) pressing to this release?
Zut Zut
Is it this one? Seems it was added to the database the month after your inquiry :) - https://www.discogs.com/The-Velvet-Underground-The-VerveMGM-Albums/release/13362604
My only complaint is that The Gift sounds muddy and you can’t make out a word of what John Cale is saying. I’ve got an 80’s remixes stereo version of White Light and this song sounds way better if you ask me.
Kakashkaliandiia Kakashkaliandiia
Well that is the mono version. So it will sound different
Honeirsil Honeirsil
I don't get the hate for this set. I'm really happy with it and I think it's great that there's a really good sounding, reasonably-priced VU mono box.
Painshade Painshade
Unfortunately there's too much wrong with this set to make it essential. The "box" is flimsy cardboard, the 3rd and 4th album has the wrong label (should mgm, not Verve), the 3rd album's mono mix is just a lame fold-down (should have used the closet mix since that's never been reissued on vinyl), and the cover of the lost album is cheesy and contains the equally cheesy 80s mixes. If only a band of this much importance could have their catalogue handled with a little care, although that seems unlikely considering the mess that is the new VU box set.
Xangeo Xangeo
The closet mix is the source for the mono folddown in this box. Note the presence of the alternate take of "Some Kinda Love" with no Sterling rhythm guitar at all and a different vocal take than the Valentin.
Mariwyn Mariwyn
Mono version of the second album is amazing! Love it. The box is a bit crap, though. What is the reasoning behind the 1969 track list?
Anen Anen
is the 1969 LP have the same mix as the 80's VU and Another View or has it been remixed?
Wizard Wizard
No surface noise or other issues with my copy of this boxset. Playing it exclusively with an Ortofon Mono MC Quintet cart (except for the stereo "lost album". Sounds heavenly...
FireWater FireWater
I agree with the other comments on this one, this is hardly a deluxe box, just a cheap cardboard box designed to look like something more expensive. I think people would be happy to shell out on a high quality package so no idea why Sundazed felt the need to cut corners...
Rindyt Rindyt
I'm never impressed with Sundazed pressings. This has the usual problems I associate with the label.... noisy, slightly off-centre pressings, very poor quality sleeves and a nasty, cheap, thin box. It's just another way of milking the Velvets' back catalogue. I'm sure somebody, somewhere (probably the Japanese) could do a worthwhile job.... but anyway - this isn't it. Everything about it is disappointing.I think the three 45th anniversary sets are a lot better than this. You get mono and stereo mixes and a whole load of great extras. The 45th anniversary set of the 3rd album is out of this world... unbelievable. I don't believe that the 1969 album here is the 4th album as intended. It's just some tracks thrown together from the two outtakes sets VU and Another View.Sundazed proved to me they don't know what they're doing when they issued the Foggy Notion 7" for RSD a few years back... a mono edit of the 1980s mix of FN and a mono mix of the 80s I Can't Stand It. Why? For what reason? Apart from money.
Kieel Kieel
It seems that after many complaints of movement damage to the contents in the original larger thin larger box, Sundazed replaced with a solid thick hardboard tray and cover box to solve the movement damage problem. The new box is more solid an substantial and nicer too. I wonder if this warrants a separate Discogs submission to account for the different boxes? Barcode is the same.
Fenrikasa Fenrikasa
I think it does, personally. Sure it says somewhere in the submissions help
Cezel Cezel
There does appear to be two copies of this box set. one is 4cm thick, the other 2.5cm.I say this, because I've got both in stock. Think I might go back to the suppler for an answer
Clonanau Clonanau
No, this box set came out last year (2012). The websites that list 1990 are wrong.
Dorizius Dorizius
Wasn't this released in 1990? 0090771400314
Dyni Dyni
I've checked with Sundazed who say that the thicker box is the original but they had numerous complaints that record sleeves were getting damaged. So the thinner version is the repress - guess that requires a second issue being added here
Shou Shou
This is such a completist-only collection. Why would you want a mono copy of the banana album and miss out on the stereo awesomeness of All Tomorrow's Parties? Or The Gift? Or The Murder Mystery? And the "definitive" lost 4th album? Says who? All it is is a selection of tracks from VU and Another View albums. And the cheap materials used... the 2nd and 3rd albums looked used once the box was opened due to them not being shrinkwrapped. The banana album is the first to be faithful to the original cover layout (i.e., high up on the square), but banana is on a separate sheet--that's right, do it yourself sticker, AND it doesn't mention Delmore Schwartz in the inner track list. What an astonishing missed opportunity. Sundazed must be laughing all the way to the bank. What an unbelievably disappointing rip-off.
Binthars Binthars
The mono versions are awesome. Hearing them with a quality mono MC cartridge is a revelation. I also have the 45th anniversary stereo releases and love them equally. Got this mono box new for $90 and while the Sundazed pressings need a good clean & proper de-stat before play they are great after that. I really can't understand all the whinging negativity in the reviews of this release.
Samugor Samugor
No surface noise, nor pop on my copies, I only listen to the 3rd album and the sound is amazing !
Uylo Uylo
To call this a beautiful deluxe box is overdoing it. The box itself is actually quite flimsy and made of rather thin cardboard. Other than that - a fine release.
Kinashand Kinashand
Agreed, the packaging is quite poor. On top of that, every disc I've spun so far (all but Nico's Chelsea Girl) has had issues with surface noise, pops, and clicks. I'm seriously considering asking to return it to Sundazed.
